Wisdom shall praise Her own self, and shall be honored in God, and shall glory in the midst of Her people, and shall open Her mouth in the Churches of the most High, and shall glorify Herself in the sight of His power, and in the midst of Her own people She shall be exalted, and shall be admired in the holy assembly.”
–Sirach 24:1-3
Throughout scripture, we encounter a divine presence that doesn’t stay distant or abstract, entering the world, comforting the weary, inspiring the prophets and prophetesses, and filling the temples with Glory. In Mormon Kabbalah, this sacred, dwelling Presence is known as the Shekinah. You may have heard of her in Jewish mysticism, where the Shekinah is the Divine Feminine Presence, often described as God’s immanence, God with us. Mormon Kabbalah deepens and expands this understanding in powerful Restorationist ways. The Shekinah is Heavenly Mother, tied to the Holy Spirit. She is the tree that bears the fruit that births the Light of Christ. And, She is the guiding, nurturing energy that lifts humanity toward Zion.
God With Us in Sacred Feminine Form
The Shekinah as Heavenly Mother, the Feminine aspect of God, She is the nurturing Presence of Eden. She is the wisdom of the revelation behind inspiration, and we are with Her when the Holy Spirit dwells in and among us. Just as Christ reveals the Father, the Holy Spirit reveals the Mother. The Father offers atonement; the Mother gathers her children to receive it. She is not distant, nor silent. She moves through dreams, guides through revelation, and comforts through covenant.
Shekinah in Exile: The Descent into the World
Just as Adam and Eve descended from Eden into the fallen world, the Shekinah descended with them. In both Jewish and Mormon Kabbalistic thought, this is not a punishment, it is a divine act of compassion. Shekinah chooses to dwell with us. She walks through our pain, our exile, and our longing. She does not do this not from above, but in acting through the Holy Spirit, from within. She is the Light in the wilderness. She is the Voice that whispers, “You are not alone.” She is the Mother who never left. This reflects a Latter Day Saint understanding of condescension (see 1 Nephi 3:37-64 [11:1-22]), not only in Christ’s descent to save us, but in Mother’s eternal nearness, comforting and uplifting her children in mortality.
Shekinah Birthing the Light, Wisdom, and Temple Presence
Shekinah is more than a theological concept. She is experiential, felt in sacred space, in quiet revelation, in the breath between words. Shekinah is the tree that bears the fruit, the light of Christ, that awakens the soul. From a Gnostic perspective, She is Sophia (Wisdom) who speaks through the revelation of intuition and understanding. When we, the Congregation or the bride of Christ, are filled with the Holy Spirit, She is the Presence that fills the temple, especially during ordinances and covenants.
When you feel God’s nearness in a blessing, when you receive inspiration in prayer, when a truth floods your heart unexpectedly, that is Shekinah speaking through the Holy Spirit. The Father and Son offer up Grace and the Atonement, the Mother and the Holy Ghost work to gather, comfort, and enlighten the children of God. In this way, She is the still, small voice. She is the warmth behind the veil. She is the sacred fire that burns but does not consume.
Restoring the Shekinah to the Earth
One of the central goals in Mormon Kabbalah is the restoration of the Shekinah, the return of the Divine Presence to Zion, both spiritually and physically. This mirrors the prophetic vision of a New Jerusalem, where God dwells with Their children once more, and the scattered Israel is gathered, healed, and made whole. In mystical terms, this is the reunification of the heavens and the earth, masculine and feminine, justice and mercy. Jesus as the Bridegroom and the Church as the Bride represent this union. And in the final days, as Zion arises, the Shekinah will return, not alone, but in fullness, in glory, and in unity with the Father.
And they shall no more be two, but one.”

Shekinah in Mormon Kabbalah
To summarize, Shekinah is the feminine face of God, most clearly seen as Heavenly Mother. She is the Divine Presence in sacred space, temples, ordinances, and personal revelation. Represented in the Holy Spirit as the nurturer, gatherer, and comforter. She is the force of healing and union, guiding fallen creation toward restoration. And, She is a key figure in the cosmic redemption of all things, a partner in Tikkun Olam, the healing of the world.
God With Us and Within Us
The Shekinah is not a forgotten Goddess or a poetic metaphor, She is the living heart of divine presence. She is in the temple and the home, in the vision and the lullaby, in fire and in whisper. She is in your tears and your dreams, your covenants and your becoming. She is Mother, She is Wisdom, She is with you. As Zion arises, She will dwell fully once more with her children.
She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.”
–Proverbs 3:15
