The Declaration of Neum, pronounced nēʹum, is a collection of utterances and revelations from an unknown prophetess who identifies as “Neum,” meaning “oracle” in Hebrew. She is described as an oracle and reader of stars. The book is presented as a series of pronouncements and teachings, often addressing the people of Judah and Israel, warning them of their sins and urging them to return to the Lord. The overall message of Neum emphasizes the oneness and unity of God (YHVH), the importance of righteousness, the consequences of wickedness, and the ultimate redemption of Israel.
Neum’s text is divided into chapters based on ancient Paleo-Hebrew symbols. These symbols are interpreted as a testament to the importance of literacy and learning within the Israelite tradition, citing a passage from Neum itself (14:16-18) that emphasizes the divine command for teaching sons and daughters to read. The symbols also represent a connection to the ancient past and the transmission of sacred knowledge across generations.
Neum warns Judah of its impending downfall due to idolatry, social injustice, and the rejection of God’s prophets. She predicts the scattering of Judah and the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The text highlights the importance of the Torah and the letters in understanding the mysteries of God. Neum encourages the teaching of these to future generations for the preservation of Israel.
Neum emphasizes the importance of seeing and understanding the truth, connecting it to the Chozeh (seer) and the foundation of Zion. Despite the warnings of judgment, Neum offers a message of hope and restoration for Israel. This redemption will come through the Son of Man, who will sacrifice himself for the sins of humanity and ultimately bring about a time of peace and unity. She stresses the importance of repenting (teshuvah), returning to God, and living righteously. She calls for social justice, emphasizing the care for the poor, widows, and orphans.
Neum’s prophecies extend to the last days, describing events like earthquakes, famines, and the gathering of Israel. The text also discusses the restoration of the priesthood to the daughters of Zion, signifying their spiritual authority and leadership in the last days. Finally, Neum paints a picture of a future Zion, characterized by peace, unity, righteousness, and the abundance of God’s blessings. In this restored Zion, social inequalities will be eradicated, and the love between God and Israel will be fully realized.
Neum offers a message of hope and warning. She warns of the consequences of straying from the Lord’s path, predicting the downfall of Judah and the scattering of Israel. However, she also offers hope for restoration and redemption through repentance and a return to the covenant. The coming Messiah and the empowerment of the “daughters of Zion” are presented as signs of a brighter future for those who remain faithful to the Lord.
